WHAT WE DO

Resilience Climate Change California-7.jpg

Since 2010, Adaptation International (AI) has supported dozens of communities, Tribes, and state, county, and city governments in their climate change planning efforts across 20 U.S. states. In many ways, the resilience journey is just as important as the destination. Adaptation International has developed and refined an innovative and localized approach to project management, planning, and community engagement driven by leading edge solutions, industry best practices, and local knowledges and expertise. Our approach ensures that the right people are involved in the project from the beginning and that those individuals contribute their knowledge, experience, and expertise to the project. This active and collaborative approach yields detailed assessments of a community’s valued assets, critical resources, and climate risk as well as effective, community-driven resilience strategies that ensure the long-term success of each project. No project is exactly the same. After learning about a community’s specific needs, we match those needs with the expertise and services provided by our trusted network of collaborators, to design the solutions we deliver to be effective as possible.

Our Services

With a wide network of collaborators, we are able to match the most needed expertise and services for a given project to deliver solutions that can be continued long after our direct collaboration. Our collaborative approach to projects can be seen in every solution we develop and helps ensure the long-term success and value of every project.

Climate Adaptation and Resilience Planning

Building off experiences from previous projects and a national database of climate resilience actions, we co-develop and prioritize resilience actions and other solutions with our partners to ensure that they are customized to the community context, equitable, and can readily be implemented.

Workshop Development and Implementation

Adaptation International has extensive experience developing and facilitating all manner of in-person and virtual workshops. Having completed more than 100 workshops, training sessions, and interactive meetings, we can ensure that your workshop is inclusive and meets the goals of the project.

Community Engagement

Investing in getting the right people involved in the project from the beginning is critical to ensuring the success of the project. Our team spends time to know the community, listen to the project staff members, and create multiple opportunities for broad community input and maximize the reach and impact of the solutions.

Mapping and Geospatial Analysis

Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and analysis is critical in identifying climate risks and underlying components of community vulnerability. Our work integrates cutting edge approaches from the social and geographic sciences to provide communities with visually compelling tools for decision-making and public education.

Vulnerability Assessments

We start each of our assessments by asking the community about the values and critical assets and resources they care about. We then work collaboratively to assess how climate change will affect these areas of concern. This focuses the work on the things that matter most to the community.

Health Impact Assessments

Climate change is already affecting the physical, mental, and spiritual health of community members. With extensive experience in both climate and public health, our team can guide your community through a rapid climate and health assessment to identify and address key health risks due to a changing climate.

Data Analysis

Seeing climate projections isn’t always enough to know what to do about them. Our team has the expertise to make those projections meaningful for your community. We routinely conduct analysis to identify, distill, and better describe how climate change will affect a community and the things that community cares about.

Communications and Graphic Design

Communication and design isn’t just about sharing the results of a project, but involving people in the creation of products that both tell their story and enhance their participation in the project. Our team pioneered the development of asset or resource focused summary sheets and frequently creates mini-documentary style videos to share the stories of our partners.
